Church Projects

St Simon's Church, Southsea

We were pleased to receive an enquiry from St Simon’s Church in Southsea for a quote for the decoration of the internal walls and ceilings of the church. Phillips Decorators received the order once the diocese approved the funding and our proposed paint system. As the works are part of the churches 150th anniversary celebrations, we got advice from Keim Mineral Paints and Brewers to ensure we were using the best possible materials on this historic building. The final decision was made to go with Keim using a coat of ‘Fixativ’ on lime areas then a base coat of ‘Grund’ and finished with ‘Ecosil Me’ in an off white. These particular paints were chosen to keep the Grade II listed building protected and also to give the desired fresh finish. Once completed and the scaffolding was dropped, the church had a sparkle to it. Every church member we met on the site thanked us and our team.

In the process our decorator, John Brennan got ‘Hurty knee’ Syndrome. The congregation prayed for him and now he is back to work, it’s a miracle!

This year is the 150th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of St. Simon’s (6th September 1864). The prime instigator for the creation of St Simons was Reverend Baldey, who used much of his own money for the construction. He had formerly been curate at St Judes, but as Southsea grew, he had recognised that the eastern part of the town would be in need of a church.
By the 1860's the urban spread had reached Victoria Road South and was growing northwards from South Parade. The new site for St Simon's was located on the edge of farmland where it met the northern edge of the growth from the south. The church itself was consecrated in 1868.
